Some fine Hand Knotting in Handmade Rugs

The artwork done in hand-knotted rugs is one-of-a-kind. Thousands of knots tied together by skilled weavers with hundreds of hours of labor invested finally result in the handmade rugs that endear. Perhaps this should be an appropriate reason behind the high price tag of the rugs.

Handmade rugs are made on large looms. The vertical looms are used extensively from start to finish for weaving these rugs. The weaver ties the warp threads vertically on the loom. The threads are woven one by one, slowly through the warp. They hold the rug together, forming the edges of the sides of the rug. The weft threads are consistently added with the knots being hand tied to the warp threads. After completion, the top and bottom warp threads get trimmed and form the fringe of the handmade rugs.

There are many visible knots in handmade rugs. The hand tied knots are used on the pile and design of the carpet. Persian Knots are used in carpets woven in countries such as Tibet, China, Pakistan, Nepal, India, Iran, Afghanistan etc. Also known as the Senneth Knot, Persian Knots are used extensively in designs with curves on them. The knot suffices for more complex and compound patterns.

Then there are the Turkish Knots. These are mainly used in highly conservative Islamic Countries like Turkey, Armenia and Azerbaijan. The knots are also known in popular culture as Ghiordes Knots, or double knots. It is supposedly a bulkier knot in comparison to its Persian counterpart and produces a richer pile.

The Jufti Knots on Handmade Rugs are ones tied on the warp thread. These get tied around 4 warp threads instead of 2 usually with Persian or Turkish. The rugs tied with these knots are usually less expensive, for they take a lot of time to make but do not wear as well as the others.

The tools to weave these carpets are an institution themselves. There are 3 of them mainly. The Gollab is in the shape of a hooked knife, meant to pull weft threads through the warp. The Comb, also called the Beater, comes into play when weft rows get added one after the other to snug the rows of the weft and knots together, forming a tight weave. The Scissors, the last of the 3, is used for hand cutting and clipping the threads from the knots evenly.

Ultimately it all comes down to the skill of the weaver. It is all in the hands, for that is the source from where the craftsmanship originates. The magnificence of the carpet in which the buyer revels is all a result of the toil, endeavour and slog undertaken by the weaver who pushes relentlessly hour after hour to finally create a piece worth selling.

Nine Area Rug Colors For Making A Room Shine

Decorating your house is all about what atmosphere you opt to create in a given room. The best way to brighten a room is to place area rugs in strategic locations in your home. There are a wide selection of colors in rugs that can make any room shine. Here is a list of how color can affect and reflect your mood and atmosphere in your home.

1. Reds – Shades of red imply exercise, dynamic power and zeal at work and at home. Using red area rugs in your bedroom, home gym or children room shows that you are not dull, maybe fascinated by sports and keen on life.

2. Blues – The blue colors imply truth, fidelity, stability, intelligence, wisdom and confidence. This means you may use blue area rugs in any room you want to show your inner confidence like the kitchen, bedroom or living room.

3. Greens – Green is nature’s color. It’s a symbol of tranquility, peace, expansion, fertility and freshness. That would suggest green area rugs are great for a room you may perform yoga or where you sleep.

4. Yellows – Yellow denote contentment, intellect and energy, so placing yellow area rugs in any room can make it bright and sunny.

5. Oranges – Orange is a mix of ecstatic yellow and active red. Since orange is an attention-grabbing color, you can place orange rugs in a room where you spend a large amount of time entertaining.

6. Purples – The color purple brings together red energy and blue stability. It is well-known to designate power, royalty, grace, poser and creativeness. The placement of purple area rugs in any room where you would like to make a luxurious environment.

7. Browns – Brown is the masculine of red and it symbolizes stability. Since brown colours are neutral and natural, brown area rugs are good for environments from rustic to modern.

8. Blacks – Black is powerful, elegant, formal and confusing. In some circles it is considered evil, but all women know black is a flattering and complex color. You can use black area rugs in any room since black is a universal color.

9. Whites – White is the complete opposite of black and denotes innocence, purity, light and goodness. The utilization of white area rugs in the bathroom or kitchen creates a crisp clean look.

Area rugs come in all kinds of shapes and color mixtures. You can choose the color you want in shapes like round, square, octagon, rectangle and even special designer shapes like heart, diamond and holiday related shapes. Select your color ; select your shape and create the room of your dreams.

How can I decorate a concrete patio with black wrought iron furniture?

I have a plain concrete patio. My house is red/brown brick with slightly off-white/taupe painted addition (next to patio) and trim. I have a black wrought iron table and chairs, a blk wrought iron glider, and 2 black rocking chairs and table. What color should I go with for throw pillows/cushions/outdoor rug. I love cozy cottage style. Any help would be appreciated to help me mak this outoor space relaxing and cozy. Thanks…I

A cozy cottage style is best achieved using a flowered patterned fabric for the cushions with a clearly understood flower and leaf design, roses or lillies or ivy.

If the furniture is out sized you can choose a large pattern. Otherwise choose a medium size pattern and repeat.

If the fabric background colour is a light green, with roses of yellow, pink or red, leaves in shades of green, you need to pick out the yellow, red or pink or green for the toss pillows. Then you can use the same color with different shades, for plates and napkins.

Be sure to avoid tropical prints or you lose the cottage look. And remember that yellow, pink, red colors are typical cottage colors.

For the floor, if the patio is covered, a braided rug or a hooked rug with flower motifs, will give a cottage look.

If it needs to be a weather resistant floor covering, you might still find a hooked rug that you can use. Otherwise a very simple geometric in greens and yellows, or several shades of green will help maintain or at least not destroy the cottage effect you want to achieve.

A
carpet consists of two parts: one is “foundation”, which is formed by warp and weft yarns and the other is the “pile”. The following is the foudation and the pile.
Foundation
1. Warp
yarns are the vertical strands of fibers stretching from the top to the bottom of a carpet. They are extremely important components because the knots are tied to them and the weft yarns are woven through them. Generally, if the warp yarns are not evenly and tightly woven, a carpet is easily to get wrinkled.
2. Weft yarns are the horizontal strands that stretch from the left to the right side of the carpet.
They are woven through the back and front warp yarns and added before or after the rows of knots, to prevent them from becoming loose. Usually the warn and weft yarns use the same fiber i.e. cotton, wool or Silk in hand-made carpets. Cotton is most widely used due to its lowest cost but wool is still quite popular in places where it is readily available. Silk is the most expensive one but it’s quite strong and elegant and thus is highly recommended as the foundation for high quality carpets.
Pile
The “pile” forms the designs and patterns and in effect is the ‘working surface’ of the completed carpet. It is the upright end of strand which is shaped by the knots that may be cut or looped.

Best way to sell persian carpet/rug in uk?

I live in the UK and have a pretty high quality carpet that is around 8 foot by 5 foot in size.

Is it reasonable to just look up Persian carpet shops nearby, take the carpet up there (inside in my car) and ask them for quotes? Ideally I’d like to go to one shop, get an accurate quote and then take the carpet away for a 2nd quote also.

Does this seem the most reasonable tactic/approach? (i know many of the people who work in carpet shops are from the middle east and may have their way of bartering. I also know they may try to sense my inexperience and try to lower the price they give me. This concerns me a alot.
Thanks for the suggestion but eBay does not give a guide on what is the best starting price to go for and I would have to keep the carpet online in eBay for a long time (because few people use eBay for trading carpets – they prefer a hands on approach.) I would like to get the deal done quickly too.

I would suggest looking online or in the shops to get a rough idea of the price you should be looking for – some suggested site:

http://buysellrug.co.uk/

http://www.orientalcarpetbrokers.com/search_origin.php?originName=Persia

I would then suggest selling on a site like ebay (you can make a 3 or 7 day buy it now listing if you want it done quick) you set the price you want to achieve for it and see what happens – you can put on an option for ‘buyer collection only’ meaning you don’t have to worry about postage or go onto interparcel and get a quote for postage to the UK and charge that price. My feeling is that you will not get a fair price in most of the trade shops especially if your knowledge of persian rugs is limited. Here is a good link about ‘How to sell your persian rug’ you might get a few hints from it:

http://www.ehow.co.uk/how_6633887_do-sell-persian-rug_.html

I have been selling rugs on ebay for quite a few years now and would be happy to give you any guidance you need if you decide to go down this route. You can contact me on the phone number listed on ebay:

Modern Contemporary Rugs

Modern contemporary rags are selected from variety of colors to match your modern contemporary room. They are of different sizes as well, to fit the size of your contemporary room.

An area rug can basically cozy up space or even establish a seating area. The modern ones add a delightful texture and pattern to a room, something that everyone believes would live to have. When you want to decorate your house, a right rug in the right place can fill your house with style.

You probably might want to surround yourself with what you want and love, area rugs are the best for you. You might not like the old type of rugs, but you will find passion in the modern contemporary rugs. Find a custom sized carpet in many fiber choices and much more area rugs for any event; from runners for fashion shows to trade show covering.

Eco-friendly natural wool shag rugs are great especially for its barefoot softness and their classic style. Natural wool rugs along with a wide selection of jute rugs, sisal rugs, seagrass and the exotic bamboo rugs are eye catching and very much attractive for your modern house.

Outdoor rugs are perfect for dining. Weather a wool sisal rug to pass from generation to generation or an inexpensive shag rug; you will the best choices for your dining room.

Sisal rugs are a blend of craftsmanship and art. They are long lasting and can also be use for decorative purposes in your house. They are relatively expensive but last for a very long time; therefore you won’t regret spending money on it.

The best about modern rugs is that they provide a unique color and come in different sizes and designs to fit your modern room.

With the best care, contemporary rugs will always remain looking great and new. Contemporary rugs should be vacuumed weekly, do this in the same direction as the pile. Set pile levels on high to discourage pilings. The problem with contemporary rugs is that without great care, they wear.

Another major cause of wear is slipping. Make sure that you put an underlay or padding to avoid this. Vacuuming the underside of the rugs will reduce the damaging of abrasives. To ensure that there is an even wear, rotate the contemporary rugs every 6 months, replace rug padding immediately when they begin to wear out.

However, remember that the rugs are professionally cleaned every 2-4 years. Hot water extraction on the rugs is discouraged; use warm water instead.

When purchasing a contemporary rug, think natural. Wool is extremely durable, easy to maintain and soft. However blends of cotton and wool are more durable-go for them! It will cost you less than going for cheaper, low quality rugs.

Synthetic fibers forfeit softness and some durability but come in a luring price.

So, whatever the size, color or design you go for, choose what is right for you. Quality should be the first thing you consider before you purchase you modern contemporary rug.

How can I get a mildew smell out of a wool area rug?

The rug is only a few months old, 5′ x 8′, short pile, and mostly wool. The label says not to use a steam cleaner on it. We recently had a mildew problem in a closet (different room) and now I am noticing the underside of the rug is starting to smell musty. The is no visible mildew yet. I live near the coast and so it is usually a little damp. I can put the rug in the sun for a few hours if that might help. Any ideas?

Anything short of bleaching the rug with chlorine bleach would be an improvement. Turn the rug over and allow it access to the sunshine for a day. This should at least kill the mildew and help the smell.

Gold And Silver Necklaces – A Buyers Guide

If you are looking for a gold or silver necklace to wear either on its own or with a pendant and would like to know a little more, this guide should provide you with the information you need to make an informed decision. Necklaces are normally a series of one or more types of link interlocked to make a chain. The carat index is used to measure the purity of gold. This is often expressed by a hallmark consisting of 3 digits engraved into the piece. These commonly range from 375 (9ct – the most dilute) to 999 (24ct – the purest). Silver has a similar index which should also be engraved into the piece. These range from 750 (lowest) to 999.9 (highest). Sterling silver (which is commonly used in jewellery) should have ‘925′ engraved somewhere on it.

Link Types

Silver and gold necklaces are made from a variety of different types of link. Belcher links are normally torus (ring) shaped and interlock at 90 degrees to the next link. Curb Links are the classic shaped link used for chains outside of jewellery. They can either be made flat or undulated. In either case each link joins to the next at the same angle so when laid flat all links can be orientated the same way. Cuban links are a similar shape to curb links but their width makes each link almost circular. Bead links are spheres with a hole bored through to allow a strand to run between them. A spacer may be used to keep the beads at a uniform distance. Rope links give the impression of a single woven strand by interlocking the links into a spiral shape.

Pendants

You may wish to attach a pendant to the gold or silver necklace you are purchasing. The only thing to keep in mind is the type of links used for the chain. If the necklace is going to be worn with a sizable pendant the shape of the links in the necklace are worth considering. You will want to choose a rounded link which allows the pendant to move freely without snagging. One such link is the belcher link. In the event you choose a necklace is not suitable for your chosen pendant, a responsible jeweller should inform you of the reason and suggest a different necklace.

Costs

The price of silver or gold necklaces are generally governed by the purity of the precious metal used to make it and the weight but in some cases designer branding can further increase the price and handmade jewellery generally costs more than jewellery that has been built by machine. As an example, 9ct solid gold necklaces are generally less than £100 where the handmade equivalent could cost upwards of £500. Remember this does not refer to gold plated jewellery (which costs significantly less).

Washing advice for woven scarves?

I have a couple lightweight woven scarves that I would like to wash before packing them up for the winter (should it ever end). I THINK they are made of floss-type string…but it could just be regular string, I’m not really sure, but I feel that they would come unwoven if I washed them in the washing machine. If I hand wash them, what kind of soap would be best? And should I hang dry them or lay them flat?
They are handmade so no washing instructions included :/

hand wash in woolite roll them in a towel and then unroll dry flat
