Color area rug for living room?

I’m trying to find an area rug for my living room, styled in what one might call casual modern (no florals or persians). The room has white walls (apartment), subdued goldish tan sofa and loveseat and burgundy leather accent chairs. Side tables and coffee table have a black finish, and wall art is predominantly black or dark brown with burgandy accents. Lots of plants, too, which introduce greens into the room. But there’s a tannish wall-to-wall, and while the room has a dark, masculine feel, which I like overall, for some reason it’s also a little monochromatic feeling. Perhaps it’s my tendencies toward solid colors. So I’m looking now to brighten and punch things up a bit on the floor without getting too garish. I’ve found lots of rugs with colors and patterns I like, but I can’t tell what would work best in that room. I’m hoping for something on the lighter side, I think, to make the blacks pop, but that will also harmonize with the golds and burgandies.

I had purchased an offwhite area rug and want to put a 3×5 area over it in front of coffee table (high traffic area). The room is more of a country type feel decor-wise. Will an oriental pattern rug (burgundy, ivory, beige navy etc be a workble choice? There is a distressed turquoise hutch that I love. Maybe more of a rust /beige rug would be better? I am not sure of the one with nacy in the border…thanks!!

Sorry to disagree with Jeanne, but an oriental rug would look great with what you have described. Oriental rugs are mixed with all types of furniture styles.
