Some fine Hand Knotting in Handmade Rugs

The artwork done in hand-knotted rugs is one-of-a-kind. Thousands of knots tied together by skilled weavers with hundreds of hours of labor invested finally result in the handmade rugs that endear. Perhaps this should be an appropriate reason behind the high price tag of the rugs.

Handmade rugs are made on large looms. The vertical looms are used extensively from start to finish for weaving these rugs. The weaver ties the warp threads vertically on the loom. The threads are woven one by one, slowly through the warp. They hold the rug together, forming the edges of the sides of the rug. The weft threads are consistently added with the knots being hand tied to the warp threads. After completion, the top and bottom warp threads get trimmed and form the fringe of the handmade rugs.

There are many visible knots in handmade rugs. The hand tied knots are used on the pile and design of the carpet. Persian Knots are used in carpets woven in countries such as Tibet, China, Pakistan, Nepal, India, Iran, Afghanistan etc. Also known as the Senneth Knot, Persian Knots are used extensively in designs with curves on them. The knot suffices for more complex and compound patterns.

Then there are the Turkish Knots. These are mainly used in highly conservative Islamic Countries like Turkey, Armenia and Azerbaijan. The knots are also known in popular culture as Ghiordes Knots, or double knots. It is supposedly a bulkier knot in comparison to its Persian counterpart and produces a richer pile.

The Jufti Knots on Handmade Rugs are ones tied on the warp thread. These get tied around 4 warp threads instead of 2 usually with Persian or Turkish. The rugs tied with these knots are usually less expensive, for they take a lot of time to make but do not wear as well as the others.

The tools to weave these carpets are an institution themselves. There are 3 of them mainly. The Gollab is in the shape of a hooked knife, meant to pull weft threads through the warp. The Comb, also called the Beater, comes into play when weft rows get added one after the other to snug the rows of the weft and knots together, forming a tight weave. The Scissors, the last of the 3, is used for hand cutting and clipping the threads from the knots evenly.

Ultimately it all comes down to the skill of the weaver. It is all in the hands, for that is the source from where the craftsmanship originates. The magnificence of the carpet in which the buyer revels is all a result of the toil, endeavour and slog undertaken by the weaver who pushes relentlessly hour after hour to finally create a piece worth selling.

The History Of Carpet: Where Did The Magical Ride Begin?

The carpet industry can be likened to one magical ride from obscurity to fame. Its origin is as vague as the purposes to which it served. Some archaeological findings indicate that carpets were used extensively – either as floor covers, curtains, tokens or gifts from one tribe to another, blankets, canopies, and covers for tombs. It was not accurately determined who wove the first carpet – was it the Persians, the Egyptians, the Chinese or the Maya tribe? Or was it simply a by-product of nomadic wandering?

The best ones were used to adorn palaces and luxurious buildings, but carpets remained ambiguous, until they were introduced to most homes, with far less opulent tastes. Carpets are now within reach of most families who desire its more comfy feel over other types of flooring.

But under whose feet did the first carpet provide its warmth? Everything and everyone has a story to tell. This is your carpet’s:

A hazy start.

Carpet making was possibly a skill developed out of necessity, as most inventions are. It is not told by evidences gathered who originated it, but archaeological findings identified groups of people who maintained it, until the craft rose to prominence among homes of distinction.

The oldest type of knotted carpet was discovered in Pazyryk Valley in Siberia. They were found in the tombs of Scythian chiefs and were estimated to be dating back to 2,500 years.

The Persian Connection.

Babylon fell on the hands of Cyrus in 539 B.C. Cyrus himself fell in deep admiration over layers and layers of carpet he saw in Babylon, and perhaps became instrumental in introducing the craft to Persia. Cyrus was so engrossed with carpets that he took most of them to his grave. In his burial grounds in Pasargadae, valuable carpets were found.

In Persia, carpet making flourished. Sheep and goats in herds provided a steady supply of quality wool; Persia became the heart of carpet making, where it evolved from craft to art.

The Chinese Influence

Recent excavations in China proved the existence of an earlier dynasty known as the Sassanid, between AD 224 and 641. Also proven, with documented evidence, were the presence of carpets.

Emperor Heraclius, in one of his conquests, brought home, along with his victory, a 90 square-feet garden carpet known as the “Springtime of Khosroe”, acclaimed as the most valuable carpet of all time.

The Turkish Impact

Seljuk, founder of the Turkish tribe, Arab Caliphates, left a strong bearing on carpet history. When he conquered Persia, Seljuk women introduced the Turkish knots to most of Persian’s carpet designs. Up to this day, most of Persian carpets are reflections of Turkish pride – with their durable knots.

The Mongolian Inspiration

Remnants of fabulous carpets were found in the palace of Tabriz, belonging to Ghazan Khan. The most remarkable time in history for Persian carpets came however, when Shah Abbas rose to power. He initiated workshops for carpets, and utilized the skills and craftsmanship of designers. Trade to Europe was also opened. Invasion of the Afghans in 1722 cut short these glorious years.

It was only much later, towards the end of the 19th century when carpet making made a comeback.

European and American companies ignited carpet making once more, and most of these companies even set up offices in Persia.

A magical ride?

Unlike its Walt Disney counterpart, carpet making didn’t pass through a charmed transition from anonymity to prominence. As deep as the color of its hues, carpet making was a silent witness to many upheavals in the annals of history, as well as some illustrious victories. Perhaps the reason why a carpet is never dull, most of the time, it comes with lively colors, deeper shades, and magnificent designs.

Carpet weaving today is one of the most popular handicrafts in Iran, and the rest of the world. Persian carpets are, by far and large, acclaimed as the most valuable variety with its lavish tapestry of colors, designs and patterns

Oriental Rugs Defined

Oriental Rugs

1949, Siberia:  A team of Russian archaeologists discovered a unique treasure representing the history of hand knotted Oriental Rugs.  Today, this art treasure hangs in Leningrad’s Hermitage Museum. The Pazyryk carpet as it is now called symbolizes a craft and tradition of which true age is unknown.  Hand knotted with approximately 240 knots per square inch, roughly 6′x6′ in size, this carpet is the oldest known example of a hand knotted Oriental rug.

Some of the largest rugs known to this day, including oversize, Palace rugs and mansion carpets were woven, (and continue to be woven), using the same age-old technique of hand knotting each individual knot the same as how the ancient Pazyryk carpet had been woven.

A hand knotted Oriental rug as defined by rug trade associations encompasses several interpretations, which to this day can be interpreted to include hand tufted carpets.

However, more traditional and conservative refinement of true Oriental rugs and the timeless art of making such, is in the following definition:

Oriental Rugs Defined:  A hand knotted, or hand made flat-woven rug, created with natural or synthetic fiber consisting of warps and wefts.  Oriental rugs are generally woven in the geographic region(s) of the Near, mid, or far East.

Age: Oriental rugs with the qualifier of antique and semi-antique are accepted as the following:  Antique – 100 years of age or older.  Semi-antique – 50 to 99 years of age.

When shopping for a true, hand knotted Oriental rug or Persian carpet online, be careful to inquire about the following terms which may imply hand tufted attribution.  Hand made, hand fashioned, tufted.

How can I decorate a concrete patio with black wrought iron furniture?

I have a plain concrete patio. My house is red/brown brick with slightly off-white/taupe painted addition (next to patio) and trim. I have a black wrought iron table and chairs, a blk wrought iron glider, and 2 black rocking chairs and table. What color should I go with for throw pillows/cushions/outdoor rug. I love cozy cottage style. Any help would be appreciated to help me mak this outoor space relaxing and cozy. Thanks…I

A cozy cottage style is best achieved using a flowered patterned fabric for the cushions with a clearly understood flower and leaf design, roses or lillies or ivy.

If the furniture is out sized you can choose a large pattern. Otherwise choose a medium size pattern and repeat.

If the fabric background colour is a light green, with roses of yellow, pink or red, leaves in shades of green, you need to pick out the yellow, red or pink or green for the toss pillows. Then you can use the same color with different shades, for plates and napkins.

Be sure to avoid tropical prints or you lose the cottage look. And remember that yellow, pink, red colors are typical cottage colors.

For the floor, if the patio is covered, a braided rug or a hooked rug with flower motifs, will give a cottage look.

If it needs to be a weather resistant floor covering, you might still find a hooked rug that you can use. Otherwise a very simple geometric in greens and yellows, or several shades of green will help maintain or at least not destroy the cottage effect you want to achieve.

Rug Carpet Cream

Rug Carpet Cream

What is the proper size for an entryway rug?

My home has stone tiles when open the front door to come inside. On either side of the entry hall is two rooms. One is the formal dining and the other is the office. Both of those rooms have the same color carpet. 20 feet from the front door and straight ahead in the entry hall, is more carpet, same color, but I have a runner on that, since it leads to the living area. I want to know the proper size for an entry rug- also what about color, can I leave it a neutral color like the office and formal dining carpet? The runner has dark blue, cream, and burgandy in it. Thank you.

Just remember that the rug should be long running in the direction towards the room at the end of the entry. It need not be too wide-I think that 28-30″ is pretty much standard.
