Oriental, Flotaki, Persian Rugs and More: How to Identify Different Styles of Area Rugs

To the untrained eye, area rugs look like all of the rest. But the more suave rug shoppers know that not all area rugs are created equal. It’s true that certain styles may look very similar to one another, which may be hard to differentiate, but there are actually specific characteristics can set one style apart from the other. To be able to pinpoint these characteristics is actually quite simple, it just requires a bit of practice. If you want to really know Persian rugs from Flotaki rugs, the first thing you need to do is study this guide that is sure to help you. The ability to identify certain styles in a single glance is not only impressive, it can truly help you when you’re out shopping for the perfect rug for your home. Here is a breakdown of the different styles of area rugs to help you on your quest to become a rug connoisseur:

Oriental Rugs: In addition to originating in Asian countries like China and Japan, oriental rugs are made in Vietnam, Turkey, Cyprus, and even Iran. A key design aspect of oriental rugs is the floral and curvilinear patterns, often seen in Persian rugs. Oriental rugs designs are quite complex and extremely ornate. They are also bold and colorful. These heavily pigmented rugs use lots of crimson, gold, black, navy blue.

Persian rugs: Persian rugs can be easily identified by their use of deep indigos and rich reds, in addition to the intricate patterns. It is standard for Persian rug patterns to fall into three categories: geometric, floral or pictorial. There is a common fallacy that Persian rugs and Oriental rugs are one in the same, but isn’t entirely accurate. They do share similar aesthetic characteristics, however many Persians also feature either an all-over pattern, a central medallion pattern, or a one-sided pattern that is either asymmetrical or unilateral. The common motifs found in Persian designs are often animals, figures, and on the more ornate designs, landscapes.

Contemporary Rugs: Out of all the different area rug patterns, these are the easiest to identify. Their very art deco patterns and color schemes, and wide-availability at nearly every home furnishing store make them a mainstay in modern decor. In addition, they are easy to identify because of their striking differences from Persian and oriental rugs. In terms of design motifs, contemporary rugs typically feature geometric patterns and shapes, and bright colors.

Flokati Rugs: the most uncommon of the bunch, Flotaki rugs are very soft and extremely durable. Origianting in Greece, these rugs were made for centuries by Greek shepherds. They are easy to identify by studying their thick, soft pile, which is typically 3 to 4 inches long. A huge advantage of a Flotaki rug is that it’s easy to maintain. It’s so durable, you can put it in the washing machine!

Best of luck with your quest for area rug knowledge, and hopefully this guide will help you find a style that is exactly what you’ve been envisioning!

Hand Knotted Rug, better home investment

Knot is a strand of wool which is wrapped round two adjacent warp threads to tie them together. This knot is reducing to form the pile of the carpet, which makes a carpet both flat woven or pile. Flat weave takes less time than a pile carpet and subsequently are much less expensive. Kilims are a popular type of flat woven oriental rugs.

Black rug are popular because in these types of carpets every single weave is knotted and tied as compared to factory made carpets. They are more durable and long lasting and not to mention more beautiful and delicate. These carpets do not fade or deteriorate with time; instead they improve in texture and quality. Moreover, hand-knotted oriental rugs are easier to wash and take care of. As a final note, hand-knotted Persian and Turkish carpets might be more expensive than factory made rugs, but since they last longer they prove to be a better investment.

With the right care and maintenance, hand knotted rug can last for decades. It is important to understand that rugs are very different from traditional wall to wall carpeting and have many advantages over it. Because of their unique design, they are largely resistant to stains and they look like new even if they have been used for years due to the special dyes used in the fabric. These dyes prevent their color from fading easily, but you should remember that direct sunlight, especially if it is intense, can damage any kind of rug. Both natura1ly dyed and synthetic dyed rugs are prone to damage from exposure to sunlight. So you need to ensure that your area rug is not exposed to direct sunlight for extended periods of time.

Rug Navy Blue

Rug Navy Blue

help matching area rug with living room couches?

I want to add an area rug to my living room but i am having a hard time finding one that complements my couches. I have a full size and a matching love seat. They are a navy blue with lots of pillows and the pillows have a light green circular design on them. My curtains match the same shade of green as the design on the pillows. What color would best complement my couches. i don’t want any more green or blue.

I went through this color wheel and what seems to go with navy are oranges, yellows and a touch of purple. I have no clue where you’d find a rug with all four colors in it but it would be pretty!

Wool Area Rug

Wool Area Rug

which has more wool, a rug with 50 g/in^2 or a rug with 4000 g/m^2? How did you figure this out? THANKS!?

Trying to decide between 2 rugs:

http://www.flokati-rugs.com/products.cfm?catid=5

http://www.homedecorators.com/P/Premium_Flokati_Area_Rug/410/

well the way i understand it is that there are 1550.0031 square inches in a square metre. Therefore, 1550.0031 x 50 = 77500.155, a much higher number than 4000, therefore the 50g/in^2 is alot denser so go with that one! The second website i think.
