Fine Sumak Rugs
Many casual rug shoppers refer to a broad category of floor coverings as oriental rugs. However, this broad category can be broken down into several distinctive styles of rugs, including fine sumak rugs, kilims, Aubussons, needlepoint, hooked and tapestry rugs. While each of the categories is distinguished by beautiful, durable floor coverings, fine sumak rugs are among the most unusual and sought after oriental rugs on the market today..
A Sumak rug has an interesting texture that is not usually found in flat woven rugs. Weaving a sumak rug is a little different than creating another woven rug. The vertical threads of the rug, usually called warp threads, are wrapped around the horizontal threads (the weft), instead of just being woven through them. This technique results in a textured weave similar to a chain stitch. Sumak carpets have a more interesting texture than traditionally woven rugs.
While the distinctive weaving pattern did not originate with the sumak rugs, it reached its most popular incarnation with these rugs. Some caucasian rugs predated fine beautiful sumak rug, and many of the patterns woven into sumak today are adapted from earlier Caucasian rug patterns.
Today’s sumak rugs retain the unique texture of the originals, and many try to recreate the antique look of the originals. Most are produced using early patterns and colorations, and many are treated to look old and gently used.
Fine sumak rugs can give a sense of antiquity and style to any room. Their gentle, worn colors and patterns can compliment almost any décor, and their unique texture can give a room the interest it needs. Consider a sumak rug for your next decorating project!

suzani rug
What is a Suzani rug?
Suzani is a type of embroidered and decorative tribal textile made in Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and other Central Asian countries. Suzani is from the Persian سوزن Suzan which means needle. The art of making such textiles in Iran is called سوزنکاری Suzankāri (needlework).
Suzanis usually have a cotton (sometimes silk) fabric base, which is embroidered in silk or cotton thread. Chain, satin, and buttonhole stitches are the primary stitches used. There is also extensive use of couching, in which decorative thread laid on the fabric as a raised line is stitched in place with a second thread. Suzanis are often made in two or more pieces, that are then stitched together
Popular design motifs include sun and moon disks, flowers (especially tulips, carnations, and irises), leaves and vines, fruits (especially pomegranates), and occasional fish and birds.
The oldest surviving suzanis are from the late 18th and early 19th centuries, but it seems likely that they were in use long before that. In the early 15th century, Ruy Gonzáles de Clavijo, the Castilian ambassador to the court of Timur (Tamerlane), left detailed descriptions of embroideries that were probably forerunners of the suzani.
Suzanis were traditionally made by Central Asian brides as part of their dowry, and were presented to the groom on the wedding day
