Various Choices in Flooring, Carpeting and Rugs

People often spend much on their home’s interior design and furniture but neglect to pay attention to their flooring, carpeting and rugs. You should be aware, however, that your flooring, carpeting and rugs have a huge impact on the total look of each room in your home. It can completely ruin the effect you want to achieve or it can greatly enhance your space. You should, therefore, make sure that you have the appropriate flooring, carpeting and rugs for each of your rooms. It is best to consult the experts in these things because you will find such a wide variety of choices to decide on.

Where else can you find the experts but in a very reputable supplier of flooring, carpeting and rugs such as Carpet One Floor & Home? Their sales personnel have been trained intensively and extensively to become highly knowledgeable and to be able to provide clients with the appropriate choices in flooring, carpeting and rugs based on the needs and preferences they express. These experts even know what additional questions to ask to elicit other choice factors which you may not have thought of before.

Flooring comes in hardwood, tile, vinyl and laminate.

Harwood flooring can be of solid hardwood or engineered hardwood. Solid hardwood can be bought in strips or flanks. Engineered hardwood flooring, on the other hand, is made of three to five layers of hardwood bound with laminate. Engineered hardwood is more stable and more moisture resistant than solid hardwood. If installed and sealed properly, both solid and engineered hardwood flooring are stain resistant and do not absorb spills. They only have to be mopped and vacuumed for maintenance.

Tile flooring can be availed of in natural stone, ceramic, glass and metal.

Natural stone tiles can be made of limestone, marble, slate or granite. The softest among these is limestone which is usually used for decorative purposes only. Marble is also not very strong and is suggested for areas with minimal human traffic. Slate is found to be more durable and is slip resistant even in areas that are often wet, such as poolsides and patios. Granite is considered the most durable and dense. It can, therefore, take on high traffic. It also resists moisture and bacteria.

Ceramic tiles can be glazed, unglazed or in mosaic form, and is also durable. Glass and metal tiles, however, are only best used as accents.

Vinyl flooring can be availed of in no-wax, urethane and enhanced urethane variants, and can be bought as tiles or as sheets. The oldest variant is no-wax vinyl. It is not very durable, though. Urethane vinyl resists stains and scuffs better and requires low maintenance. Enhanced urethane vinyl is the newest variant and is most resistant not only to scuffs and stains but also moisture and harsh household chemicals. Enhanced urethane vinyl can be used even in bathrooms and only needs sweeping or mopping for maintenance. It comes in various designs, some of which look like hardwood or natural stone flooring.

Laminate flooring can also look like hardwood, natural stone or tile but is more durable and, ironically, more affordable. It is resistant to moisture, scratches, stains and fading.

On top of your flooring, you can choose to add carpets such as broadloom carpets and wool berbers, or rugs. Carpeting may also be layered with rugs. You can choose from among Oriental rugs, runner rugs, area rugs and round rugs.

With the expert help of the sales personnel from Carpet One Floor & Home, you can surely make the right choice in flooring, carpeting and rugs. They also supply solid warranties that will protect your purchase. Furthermore, your purchase will include both delivery and impeccable installation services. All you need to do is enjoy your new flooring, carpeting and rugs.

Home Décor Tip: Rug Runners

There you are, carrying a cup of coffee back to your workspace at home. It’s hot, you’re still sleepy, your hand slips—SPLASH! Your precious Arabica blend that you got as an anniversary gift from the office is now a pool on your carpet. You sigh, you curse, you get mad at yourself. How can I cover this stain, you wonder. Here’s an idea: rug runners.

So what’s the point of a rug runner? Rugs, while they have many functions, are mainly decorative; a rug serves your tastes and needs in whatever space you put it. Hallways and staircases don’t really tend to have all that much personality to begin with. Why not jazz up the floor and give the coat rack something to stand proud next to? That umbrella holder is lonely, so very lonely. Cheer it up a little with a touch of bright color from a shag wool rug runner. Furthermore, rug runners are longer, slimmer, and ideal for hallways and staircases in your home. On stairs, they provide traction and thus reduce the chance of tumbling down. Similarly, in a hallway, rug runners keep you from slipping on a wet floor. Plus, rug runners give you a cozier, more intimate feeling to those narrow spaces.

Think of the other things a rug runner could do for you. Noisy, squeaky steps are silenced by this rug cushioning. Hallway spills land on the rug, which can be easily cleaned, as opposed to the carpet, which needs one of those carpet cleaning coupons and some guy in a van with foamy bubbles painted on the side to get out. They protect against dirt and soil tracked into the house. And they feel so good underneath your feet. Imagine coming home to an exquisite pattern and that soft wool feeling in between your toes. Or sisal, if prefer. Or even a bamboo rug runner! The possibilities just keep going.

Certain rug runners may need some assistance from a professional, but a braided rug runner is typically easier to install. Once it’s on your floor, just come home like you do everyday and take satisfaction in knowing that you are preventing slips on the floor, spills on the carpet, and decorating your home in a tasteful, colorful fashion. If all else fails, you’re making that umbrella holder happy.

Cheap Rugs And Runners

Cheap Rugs for your kitchen

Cheap rugs are not the first thing you think of when looking at floor covering for your kitchen, but they are a surprisingly useful addition. Many years ago my grandmother had an old rag rug in her kitchen. This was really useful as the kitchen floor was made of stone and the whole kitchen was really cold. The rug helped to warm it up and as a child learning to cook in Grandma’s kitchen I was very grateful for it. One disadvantage was that being in the kitchen many feet walked all over it, and because of its design it held the dirt and became really grubby, so about every year a new one had to be made, as these old fashioned rugs didn’t wash well. They were cheap because they were hand made by my grandmother. Times have changed, and cheap rugs are available which can be easily cleaned and can still produce that old fashioned warm look in your kitchen.

Cheap rugs come in many designs, and you can still get shaggy rugs which emulate that old fashioned rag rug design so popular many years ago, with the advantage that they are easy to clean. Stone floors became unfashionable and were replaced by linoleum, which had a slightly warmer feel. Today’s modern kitchens have a range of flooring, ranging from laminate to quarry tiles and stone. Nostalgia is a popular look and cheap rugs can really give that feel of a traditional kitchen. I like rugs with a classic pattern, which tone in with the colour on my walls, and at the moment have two matching rugs, one large cheap rug on which my pine kitchen table stands, and the other by the door. To capture the feel of the rag rugs popular in Grandma’s day, I have used chenille rugs to give a similar texture.

I love the nostalgic look myself but I realise that it is not everyone’s choice. To update the look slightly and give your kitchen a contemporary feel, choose cheap rugs which have an abstract design. There are some bold designs in bright colours which tone in well with the minimalist look of a stainless steel kitchen and giving a splash of colour. Swirls and squares also look good in an otherwise plain kitchen.

Don’t worry about cleaning your cheap rugs in the kitchen. With modern materials they are hard working and clean up well. I cook every day in my kitchen and find that usually vacuuming my cheap rugs is enough. One little tip – vacuum both sides of your cheap rug to prevent dirt from getting deep into the rug. This will keep them looking better for longer. If there are any spills, as can easily happen in a kitchen, I wipe them up quickly and there is usually no problem. Once every six months I wash my cheap rugs, using ordinary soap and water and drying them slowly. This means my cheap rugs look as good as new afterwards, and last for many years, only needing replacing when I want to change my colour scheme.

How Best to Use Striped Carpet

Striped carpets can provide a great alternative to more complex patterns or single colour carpets when used in the right way. If you are creating a room with a retro feel, a striped carpet is the easiest way to achieve the effect while retaining a modern feel and avoiding 70’s retro wallpaper. When combined with pale coloured walls and minimalist furnishings the room appears stylish without seeming dated.

One of the most common applications for striped carpet is carpet runners. These are strips of carpet which are laid over hardwood stair floorings to create a central carpeted area, leaving a few inches either side exposed, which can either be laminated or painted. When used in this way the stripes should run down the stairs as opposed to across them. This technique is normally complimented with white walls in the stairway. The colour scheme can be as simple or as complex as the surrounding decor allows.

If you are looking to use striped carpet to cover the entire floor area of a room a black and white pattern will create a very high contrast. When combined with a uniform striped pattern the result may be too garish. A more vibrant colour scheme will help break up the pattern especially if it includes more than two colours.

In most cases the walls should be decorated using a single colour per wall to maximise the effect of the stripes. Subtle patterns can compliment striped carpet quite well as it does not attract attention away from the carpet to such a degree that it clashed but strong patterns or striped walls may cause unwanted imbalances in perspective.

If you are replacing stairway carpet but leaving behind a plain carpet in the hall or landing a black and white striped carpet may be the most suitable stripe pattern. Regardless of the colour of the plain carpet this colour scheme should fit right in. A patterned carpet at either end of the stairs will contract strongly against the stripes and detract from the effect.

When used effectively, striped carpet can product a clean, spacious feel to a room. By avoiding sensory overload from other furnishings and decor a retro or minimalist theme can easily be achieved.

Long Hall Runners

Bright Bright Red after a long run/ workout?

I’m a cross country and track runner– I know when I run I get a little pink- flushed, which is normal– but this year when i was running inside I turned Bright Red and everyone was asking me if I was ok (I was sort of ready to pass out and dizzy)– but I read that this might be because I’m breathing wrong– can anyone suggest any breathing techniques to do while running? Our school doesn’t have an indoor track so we run in the hall ways and since I’m a long distance runner we run for quite a longer time and distance— are there any exercises I can do to help the tomato red disappear faster? thanks for all the responses!

It may be that the halls are confining and when running as a group, the air-flow is stagnate, if indoors, and not allowing you to “cool” enough when running the halls. Next training run indoors, weigh yourself before and after the workout to see if your losing too much perspiration. If not then it may be that the halls have too much humidity and your not getting enough cooling from sweating. Be sure to hydrate well before and during the workouts as well as after. As for as breathing goes, try breathing in for two strides and out for two, or in for two and out for one until you find what feels comfortable for you.
