Oriental Rugs, Turkish Rugs Cleaning Tips – How To Care For Your Rug?

When you get a new handmade Oriental, Turkish rug or Tribal rug, you want it to last for many years and to look fabulous every day.  After all, you have spent a lot of money on your rug and your rug is an investment.  It will only increase in value over the years, which makes it that much more important to care for it properly.

The first part of caring for your rug is to ensure that it is cleaned regularly.  You can vacuum your rug at least once a week, but when you do try to use low suction and keep the beater brush set so that it will only skim the surface of the pile.  If you can use a carpet broom or a straw broom instead of a vacuum, that would be ideal.  The key here is that you do not want to strip the natural lanolin out of your rug or it will become dry and loose its natural luster.

If you have a spill on your rug, then you can often clean it yourself by blotting it dry and then applying a solution of 2-3 drops of gentle soap and water or water and 1-2 teaspoons of white vinegar.  Another good choice for soap is shampoo.  It is gentle and designed to clean natural fibers.  Do not use apple cider vinegar and do not rub the carpet.  Only blot gently.  In addition to this routine and spot cleaning, it is important to take your rug to a professional rug cleaner every 6 or 7 years.

There are occasions in which a rug might become wet, such as if your home was flooded.  If your rug ever becomes wet or damp, you must hang it up immediately.  A wet rug should never be left on the floor for any length of time.  Hang the rug outside if possible and allow it to air dry.  Make sure it is 100% dry both front and back before placing it on the floor once more.

Another important part of your rug care is to rotate the rug periodically.  This is done for two reasons.  One is that the areas of wear will be changed every so often, which will ensure that the rug is evenly worn over the years.  The other reason to rotate the rug is to ensure that the rug is in different positions relative to the sunlight so that the natural fading of the rug colours will be even.  Rotating once every few months is a good rule of thumb.

As you can see, regular rug care is not difficult, but ensuring it is done is important when it comes to the beauty and longevity of your rug.  You want your rug to last for years and you want the value to increase.  The rug might be something you want to give your children one day or something that you plan on selling later on.  Either way, keeping your handmade rug clean and in good shape will ensure that you have a thing of beauty in your home for many years.

Oriental Rugs – History And Information

Oriental rugs are handcrafted rugs woven in the Middle East and the Orient – mostly regions extending from China in the east, to Turkey in the west and the Caucasus in the north, to India in the south. Authentic oriental rugs are knotted with pile or woven without pile and exclusively handwoven, which makes them unique and more exquisite, precious, and expensive than the other types of rugs. Some of the most popular and best oriental rugs include the Turkish, Caucasian, Turkoman, Afshan, Donkeybags, Prayer Rugs and Kilims rugs.

Short History:

The earliest known oriental pile rugs were those found in a Scythian burial site in Outer Mongolia dating back to the fifth century B.C. The second millennium B.C in Egypt and Central Asia had already seen the evolution of the art of rug weaving so by the fifth century B.C., rug weaving had become a fairly well-developed art. When the Silk Route came into being in the 17th century during the Safavid reign in Central Asia, oriental rugs started gaining immense popularity and Europe began to import them in large quantities. The rug making art and industry in the Orient also became a lucrative, highly skilled occupation. By the mid 19th century, not only the rich but the middle class citizens of Europe also began to value and afford these exquisite handwoven rugs.

Knots and Oriental Rug Weaving:

Oriental Rugs are handwoven on looms. The pattern of the rug is created by the knot (pile). Pile knots are of two types – symmetric and asymmetric. Symmetrical knots can be tied in such a way to give the pile a left or right inclination. Knot density is measured by counting the knots vertically and horizontally within the given area along the back of the rug. The size of warp (foundation threads wrapped around the loom), warp depression, weft (thread inserted along the width of the loom) and pile threads all determine the knot density. A cartoon (preliminary sketch similar in size to the work) may be created as a guide before weaving.

The loose warp threads along the ends are knotted, woven or braided into the fringe after the weaving. The Selvage is the edge formed after a single terminal warp or a cord made of various terminal warps is wrapped with the weft threads. The side cord may also be added only after the rug has been woven and removed from the loom, and a single cord is sewn on to the side of the rug. To create a rounded finish, an overcast (warps wrapped with a separate thread in circular fashion) may be used.

Type of Materials used for Weaving Oriental Rugs:

Wool, cotton, silk and rayon are commonly used in weaving oriental rugs. Wool and Silk are generally used in the pile. Wool is the most common fiber in the Oriental rug weaving industry and silk is the most expensive. Silk, which is also the most resilient, is used for creating the most elaborate and intricately knotted rugs because of the possibility of creating unique and exquisite texture unmatched by any other. Cotton is mostly used for weft and warp. Rugs made from rayon are cheaper and less durable though they almost resemble silk.

Carpet cleaning

When it comes to cleaning carpets, the stakes are even higher. Although the area and oriental rugs are a great addition to any home, they are particularly difficult to clean and vulnerable to damage if not cleaned properly. The first problem is that many carpets, even high end Persian rugs are not colorfast. This means they are vulnerable to transfer color, dye migration and discoloration.

Small Oriental Rug

What to do if your oriental rugs are in a flood?

Just because your oriental rug has become very wet does not necessarily mean that it is damaged. Often when they are professionally cleaned they use water based soaps. Recently I rescued a collection of rugs from a flood and only one of the 9 rugs was damaged, where the colours had run, which could only partially be remedied. The others were fine and none the worse for the event.

The first thing to do is at the first chance to dry them out. Very often when a rug is wet it looks uneven and does not lie flat, that is OK it usually goes back when completely dry. If the weather permits put it outside on a hard dry surface, a patio, driveway or even a pebble surface and in the sun. If you have or can borrow a “wet and dry” vacuum cleaner you can extract quite a lot of the moisture to reduce the drying time. If the rug is small you can lay it on towels first, roll it up tight and leave for 15 minutes, then put out to dry. When a Rugs is drying every hour or so turns it over as there is a lot of condensation underneath and this helps to dry them faster. You can tell when it is dry when it become pliable again. If you cannot dry it outside do a similar operation indoors with the assistance of a fan and a dehumidifier if you can.

The rugs can also smell quite a bit when wet, this usually goes when they are completely dry.

Do not roll carpets up when wet and leave them. I have come across easily salvageable rugs that have been ruined this way.

Depending on the quality of the flood water the rugs will probably need to be professionally cleaned later to remove any residues. This is important for radiator leaks as the chemicals can damage the rug over time.

If you cannot handle the emergency drying work immediately call in a professional to avoid delay.

Quality Persian Rugs

Persian carpet is the beautiful and valuable work of art. It embodies in it Persian life style, culture and art. The major factors that results in the creation of these carpets are good material, delicacy of putting the knots together and selection of beautiful colors and design patterns. Timeless work efforts are put in order to make these carpets that are hand-made and take around 8 to 9 months.

Amongst the ancient civilizations Iranians were the first to start carpet weaving and after centuries of hard work and toil they took mastery over it and achieved the name for themselves. Persian carpets are different from other carpets because of their unique curve designing which is much harder than carpets with geometrical designs. They pay far more attention to the quality while choosing the fabric.

They use pure wool, silk, cotton or animal skin. No man made materials are used. That is why they have excellent durability, the shades don’t fade away and they stay clean for a longer period, and most of all they don’t absorb dust very easily. What else do we need in a carpet? Persian carpets are valuable than all other carpets due to the above-mentioned factors. Their life cycle is quiet long.

You have to invest $2000 to $4000 to buy a Persian carpet. Nowadays patterns, colors, and designs of carpets from countries like Pakistan, China, and India are totally based on Persian carpets. You also get a good resale value for these carpets. What more can be said about the quality and beauty of this piece of art. It is recommended if you are looking for an everlasting investment, you should buy a Persian rug. It has everything you will need in completing your room.

Oriental Rugs And Carpets

The Fascinating History Of An Oriental Rug

The fascinating history of an Oriental rug shows that men first began looking at creating or improving floor and window coverings nearly at the dawn of human civilization. Initially, rugs were generally made from the furs and skins of animals, though improvements in weaving and also in the domestication of animals meant that they could be sheared of their wool, which soon became common in rug making.

All Oriental rugs are knotted, and scholars aren’t exactly certain of when they first came into being. It is thought that those improvements in weaving helped to create the conditions that led to these particular styles of rugs coming onto the scene at some point. Some scholars believe the Egyptians were the first while others maintain that the Chinese perfected the true Oriental rug.

Just about every scholar, though, believes that this particular rug was not created — at first — as some sort of ornamentation or decoration. Rather, it was developed in order to provide adequate shelter from the elements. It wasn’t until later in human history that these rugs began to be created solely for their aesthetic purposes. Though rug making itself hasn’t changed much, styles generally have.

Carpet weaving techniques and innovations are usually thought to have begun about 2500 or so years ago. A team of archaeologists working in a valley in 1947 in Siberia in a region near to Mongolia found what they called a burial chamber that had a large (7′ x 6′) carpet within it. This burial chamber was the local chieftain’s resting place and is thought to have been created in the fifth century BC.

There is even mention made of carpets or rugs in the Bible. Describing the building of King Solomon’s Temple (1014-965 BC), the Bible mentions a covering or curtain of purple and blue with cherubim woven into the fabric. Also, scholars studying the rule of the King of Babylonia, Nebuchadnezzar, found that he prized rugs in all of their styles, colors and shapes.

The Chinese under various emperors over the centuries also were great fans of rugs and carpets. Emperors during the Sung Dynasty of 962-1279 AD set up workshops for craftsmen to perfect the art of rug making. Generally, these extremely high quality carpets or rugs featured Taoist or Buddhist iconography. The Italian explorer Marco Polo brought several examples of such rugs back with him.

Without doubt, the most famous makers of Oriental rugs in the old world were the Persians, whose examples of the art are valued extremely highly by many connoisseurs. These Persians — mainly during the reign of King Khosrow I (531-579AD) — shared their secrets with many countries near to them, such as what is now Pakistan. Khosrow I was known to favor certain designs in Oriental rugs.

The fascinating history of an Oriental rug is also a microcosm of the ways in which humans always tend to take something that initially was designed for a very utilitarian purpose and improve upon it to the point where the making of it becomes practically an art. These beautiful and unique carpets and rugs are just one example of this tendency. They are just as highly prized today as they were 2500 years ago.

Ardebil – Persian Carpets

Interesting Facts About Persian Carpets

Carpet weaving is one of the mainstays of Iran’s economy. It is most famous for the hand woven carpets but these days even machine made ones are being made in large varieties. This is not only an industry but also an art form in its own right; in 2008 alone Iran’s export of the hand woven carpets occupied 30% of the world market and amounted to $420 million. Approximately 1.2 million are directly or indirectly linked to this industry, however in the present times it’s facing a threat from the machine made varieties, both from Iran and other countries which copy the same designs.

Iran is also the world’s largest exporter of the hand made variety of carpets. The handmade carpets specially ones with the intricate Persian patterns and designs are more expensive than the machine made ones, they take longer to make and are also artistic masterpieces, you will rarely ever find two carpets with same pattern, however the artisans and weavers who actually make these are rarely ever recognized for their efforts.

In 2007 National Iranian Carpet Center declared that carpet exports were highest in the country’s non-oil exports and nearly 5 million people were involved. Primarily all the carpets are made from wool, other materials include silk and cotton and these are used for the foundation of city and workshop carpets. The type of wool also varies; major ones include Kork wool, Manchester wool and Camel Hair wool. Silk carpets are also produced, but because of their lustrous look and high expense they are mostly reduced to work as wall tapestries, if used as a carpets these do not wear out as much as the other varieties.

The designs of the Persian rugs are very intricate and colorful. After much study the basic designs which adorn the Persian carpets have been divided into the following categories: historic monuments and Islamic buildings, Shah Abbassi patterns, spiral patterns, all-over patterns, derivative patterns, interconnected patterns, paisley patterns, tree patterns, Turkoman patterns, hunting ground patterns, panel patterns, European flower patterns, vase patterns, intertwined fish patterns, Mehrab patterns, striped patterns, geometric patterns, tribal patterns, and composites. Each design is specific to a particular area and these are like heirloom passed from one generation to another. These days even computers have been put to use to help out with the designing. The process of making a hand woven carpet can last from a few weeks to years and basically depends on the type or carpet and the size. Two basic types of knots which are used in these carpets are symmetrical Turkish or Ghiordes knot and asymmetrical Persian or Senneh knot.
