Oriental Ivory
Hello. Is there a way to tell the difference between an old ivory piece opposed to bone or horn?
The little oriental man holding what looks like a scroll and walking stick has a bottom which makes it easy to see what the material used looks like but I need a bit of info on what to look for.
I was intrigued, so I did a little searching. I thought there wouldn’t be an answer – isn’t ivory made from tusks, which is horn? But it turns out that you can tell the difference between ivory and some other “ivory-like” substances. Here’s a page that has photos to tell if the piece is ivory, plastic, or bone:
