Agra is a City in India

Agra is a city on the banks of the Yamuna River in Uttar Pradesh .On the north it is bounded by Mathura, on the south by Dhaulpur, on the east by Firozabad, on the south east by Fatehabad and on the west by Bharatpur. It is the third biggest city in Uttar Pradesh.

It has a number of monuments ranging from the world known such as Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri complex to the lesser known tombs such as Sikandra, Mariams tomb, Itmaduddaulahs tomb and Chini ka Rauza. Ram Bagh and Swami Bagh Temple at Dayal Bagh, may not be so famous but have an indelible impression in the hearts of the natives of the city with their own history to boast of.

Across the railway tracks from the Delhi Gate of Agra Fort, the Jami Masjid was built by Shah Jahan in 1648. An inscription over the main gate indicates that it was built in the name of Jahanara, Shah Jahan’s daughter, who was eventually imprisoned with Shah Jahan by Aurangzeb.

Previously known as Araambagh, is the probably amongst one of the first Mughal monuments of India. Built by Emperor Babar in 1526 for his recreation, its architecture shows Afghani influences.

If you get the chance, Agra is well worth a visit. Almost any inclusive tour to the main sights of Northern India will include it most follow some variation on the theme of the golden triangle, the other points of which are Delhi and Jaipur. Apart from which, it’s easy for any independent traveller to India to reach, only a few hours from Delhi by train or bus. There are any number of places to stay, of all styles and prices, from palace hotels and plushy multinationals, down to basic backpacker hostels at very basic prices.

The best time to go is between October and March, although prices will be predictably higher then than during the hot weather April to July or the monsoon that follows it. Go prepared for hassle and hubbub, beggars and thieves. Or, better still, go as a royal dignitary, have the place cleared for you in advance and avoid all that. Maybe then you will have a chance to see the Taj Mahal as it should be seen, as a teardrop on the cheek of time, in the words of Rabindranath Tagore. Such delicacy of perception is impossible at the regular tourist times.

Types Of Persian Rugs

Persian rugs can be classified into Persian City Rugs and Persian Tribal Rugs. Each type within these two is normally named after the city or tribal name in which it is manufactured and designed. These are some of the most popular Persian rugs (the first four fall under Persian City Rugs):

Afshar Rugs: These are smaller rugs usually designed with geometric pattern. Multiple connected medallions in diamond shape, All-over gul farangi (roses), botehs, and chicken-like motifs (Afshar-e-Morghi) are the common designs. Colors range from dark red, reddish brown, brown, dark reddish-blue, dark blue, burnt orange, ocher, and camel. The foundation is often wool, but cotton foundation may also be used in some rugs.

Tabriz Rugs: Most of the designs are curvilinear though geometric are also found. The symmetric (Turkish) knot is common with numerous colors used in one rug, and very diverse in palette. The common background and border colors used in this design are pink, peach, camel, beige, and ivory. The overall look of Tabriz rugs is pastel. Motifs may come in an assortment of colors such as blue, green, yellow, orange, and lavender. The foundation is usually silk and wool pile with silk highlights.

Kashan Rugs: About 95% of the Kashan rugs pattern is curvilinear. An elongated diamond-shaped and lobed medallion with floral pendants is a popular traditional design. This design usually has a navy medallion with similar corners and border in a red background or vise versa. Vase, hunting and pictorial are also popular. The common background Kashan rug colors are navy, rich red, beige and ivory. Other colors such as red, blue, turquoise, ocher, beige, white, brown and occasionally green are used for the designs.

Kerman Rugs: These are also mostly curvilinear in pattern. They are famous for Kerman pictorials which fall under the pictorial category of pattern. Traditional Kerman designs include all-over floral, boteh, stripes, paneled garden, prayer, vase, garden, hunting, animal, and pictorials using both Persian and European themes etc. Modern versions consist of Aubussons or Koran (Quran) medallion-and-corners with an open field. Rich red, red-blue, lime green, pink, ivory, gray-blue, turquoise, orange, champagne and beige are some of the colors commonly used.

Baluch Rugs: These rugs are hand-woven by the nomadic people of the Baluch tribe in southern Iran, following an ancient Persian tradition, dating back to 2500 years. The design is unique with an overall pattern, with rich burgundy with some navy and ivory as the main colors.

Shiraz Rugs: Hand-woven rugs made in Shiraz, Central Iran, simply done with crudely done with the pile cut long with plain color schemes. Geometric motifs, small animals or plants are commonly used in the designs with selvages done with a barber-pole effect using two colors. Red is the main color used.

Wiss Rugs: These tribal handcrafted rugs come from the village of Wiss, near Hamedan in Iran. Traditional dense floral patterns with vases, foliage, palmettes, and garden elements are commonly used. Dark shade of red or burgundy is the main color. Wiss rugs are known for the resemblance to Arak and Tabriz designs.

Area Rug Placement

Finding the right area rug can be a hard and stressful task considering the large varieties of colors, designs, shapes and sizes to choose from. This is why one must consider the basic factors in selecting an area rug. But one might ask where he or she would start. What factors do you have to first take note of? And how would you know what color, material and size to choose?

Rug placement most probably is one of the factors that you might want to consider first in selecting a rug. It is important to know where the rug is going to be placed. As you consider the placement of the rug, the other factors will follow: such as color, materials and size.

Who says size doesn’t matter? Who would want to choose a rug that is so undersized or too big? Standard sized rugs, such as 3 x 5’s and 4 x 6’s, are usually placed in rooms to accentuate furniture and inglenooks. These rugs, and even smaller, can also be used in entry ways, kitchens and bathrooms as a floor mat. Larger rugs, like 6 x 9’s and 9 x 12’s, are commonly used for living rooms and dining rooms. Again, know where you want the rug to be placed.

Color-wise, rugs that are placed on receiving areas should have a light and soft shade; thus, giving the room a warm and cozy feel. Should you place rugs under dark-colored furniture that you intend to make the center of attraction, make sure you select lighter toned rugs and simpler designs to highlight the fixtures. This also works with hardwood floors of darker shades. Nonetheless, if you plan to set an area rug as the focal point of the room, select rugs with intense colors and intricate designs; provided that the rooms motif is simple and wouldn’t contrast with the rug’s pattern.

Know what room you want it to be positioned so as to know a rug’s function; whether it stands as a mere floor covering or a wall décor. Pondering on a rug’s function will allow you to consider the material of the rug. For rooms with heavy foot traffic like living rooms and dining areas, choose a rug that is made with fibers that are resilient to dirt and stains; specifically natural fibers like wool. If you wish to use an area rug as a wall décor (like tapestries), choose rugs made of natural silk; since silk tends to last better than other natural materials because of its delicate and lustrous quality.

Remember to bear in mind what part of the room the rug is going to be positioned; whether it is placed on doorways or near air vents, etc. This is because some rugs are too thick or some doors just don’t have enough space allotted for an area rug; this would either cause the door to not open or allow the rug to slide and shift every time the door opens. Also there are rugs that can’t withstand the heat from air vents. Make sure you pick a rug’s material carefully based on the placement of the rug.

My wife was helping out a homeless lady and somehow brought home black carpet beetles which are causing havoc with our sanity. We have four cats and they ignore the beetles. We’d like to kill the bugs dead but don’t want pesticides that might harm the cats. Any ideas?
